2003 YE Camping Weekend

April 25-27, 2003 — River Forest Campground — Deland, Florida

Inbound students, outbound students, and guests enjoyed a weekend in the Ocala National Forest, arranged by Pete Colverson (Ayelen's first host dad) and John Gregory. A stormy Friday night prompted everyone (except Pete) to decide against setting up tents outside, instead spreading out their sleeping bags on the floor of the main building.

Saturday turned out nicer, and we headed over to Alexander Springs for canoeing and swimming. Rob Overly established a lasting friendship with a squirrel, which was apparently willing to risk the $500 fine for feeding wildlife to get an unending supply of Rob's peanuts. Back at the campsite, it was traditional American camping fare: barbecued burgers, baked beans, potato salad, and, around the campfire a bit later on, those nourishing s'mores.

Everyone shared in the cooking and cleaning duties, which made it a great weekend for all. Special thanks to Bob Rella, who couldn't attend, but sent along plenty of food!
