In the waning months of January, when cold fronts roll
through northeast Florida and residents begin to bundle up, the Rotary
exchange students of district 6970 and 6990 head south for a four day
weekend in the Florida Keys, surrounded by the turquoise water of the
Gulfstream and experiencing breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
Seacamp, located in the middle of the key deer preserve of Big Pine
Key is an educational facility with a focus on educating students on
marine ecology and the effects of human development. Founded by Irene
Hooper, a member of the Big Pine Rotary Club, Seacamp offers students
from around the world the opportunity to snorkel and explore the diverse
marine habitats of the reefs and mangrove shores surrounding the island.
With the ocean as a backdrop, students turned environmental activists
discuss issues such as coastline development, marine biodiversity, water
quality, over fishing, and global warming with the intent of bringing
this new found knowledge back to their home countries.
