Each year, in every Rotary district worldwide, Rotarians
gather for a special event - the District Conference. In District 6970, the
Conference was held in Jacksonville during the weekend of April 18-19, and
the Youth Exchange program had a significant presence there.
Current inbounds and next year's outbounds opened the
Friday luncheon with the annual Youth Exchange Parade of Flags, followed by
the presentation of the Exchange Student of the Year recognition, to Danish
inbound Thore Fisker. Thore was
also awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by District Governor Cecil Gibson.
Throughout the day, conference attendees enjoyed the
opportunity to learn about our exchange students' home countries and
activities here, through the many displays presented by the inbounds in the
House of Friendship.
The afternoon plenary session on Rotary's youth activities
was highlighted by speeches by 2008-09 outbound
Linda Rogers (India), current
inbound Kevin Murphy
(Argentina), and 2006-07 outbound
Hannah Klein (Japan).
Following that program, our inbounds were hosted for the
evening by Arlington Rotarian David Shacter and his wife Melody. An early
morning wake-up call was necessary to head out to the Springfield Community
Gardens, where the inbounds took the idea of "community service" into their
own hands. It all made for an important and fun weekend, and a great way to
demonstrate to District 6970 Rotarians what the Youth Exchange program is
all about.
