Nathan's Bio

Hi everybody,

First of all sorry for writing my bio so late but here I am always doing something.

So, my name is Nathan and I am 17. I will turn 18 on the 28th of November, so I become an adult in Florida. I come from Belgium, from a rich historical city called Liege. I live there with my two parents. I also have an older brother, Thomas, who just turned 20. And Emilie my little sister.

My hobbies are playing tennis and hang out with my friends. I also like to go to the movie theatre and to ski.

Here, I live in Edgewater, close to Daytona. Already one month here and it went so fast. Like I know that this year is going to be so short. But I take advantage of every single day. I have done so many things here and met so many wonderful people.

I want to thank my sponsor club (Rotary Club d’Esneux Aywaille) and my host club (Edgewater Rotary Club) for providing this unforgettable experience. And also my host mother who has already done so much for me and I know that without her everything would not be possible.

Bye everybody.

October 4 Journal

Hi dear visitors, friends, Rotarian or curious…

Already in October!

I suppose I have to apologize one more time for not giving news earlier but no kidding, I never saw the time going by so fast. Sometimes I wish I could freeze the time because time is just flying and I am enjoying my state a little bit more every day.

I start to be used to this beautiful state and all its characteristics. I am now used to the hot weather. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes still like my blood but that’s ok. For the food, I am pretty lucky that my host mother cooks very well and healthy and we try to take time to eat together. (Thank you MM). Still, I gain a few kilos because when I am not at home I don’t eat so healthy…at all.

For the language, I really think I made really big progress in English. Even if it’s still not perfect…at all, I understand nearly everything of what people say.

I made a whole lot of new friends and met as much interesting and nice people.

So let me share a few of the good moments I had since the beginning.

- The departure: Leaving Belgium and all the people I love for one year was really not easy to do. Saying goodbye at the airport was the most difficult moment I had since now. But I did it! My flight was long because my second plane was very late. But I finally arrive at Orlando airport at 1.40 AM (more than 6 hours later than normal). I had an extraordinary welcoming with banners and lots of people.

- My first days: At the beginning, I was a little bit tired and shy but I learned to know my family better and really liked them. I live with my host mother and she has two daughters who are now in college so I don’t see them a lot anymore. But before school starts we went to De Leon Spring kayaking, make pancakes and hang out by the water. It was really cool.

- Rafting trip: I was just arrived when I went to a rafting trip in South Carolina and Georgia with 2 other exchange students (Jonas and Rudi), and Tom McDermott, the host father of Jonas with who I still have very good contacts. It was really exciting up there and I made friends with the other exchange students. We also went to Charleston to see Patriot’s Point and Atlanta to visit the WORLD largest aquarium and the original Coca Cola museum.

- We had I little party with the other exchange students in the same area as me at Tom’s house where I met new people too.

- My first Surf try: A big thing here in Florida is surfing so I had to try it. So I went and tried to surf. I did pretty well even if it was ridiculous for the people here.

- School: I go to New Smyrna Beach high school and I simply love it. There is where I made most of my friends and I really have a good time there. I already know so many people that it’s impossible to remember all of their names. I joined the swim team and have practice nearly every day. I really love it and we are pretty good (go Cudas!). I will also join the tennis and soccer team later.

- Orientation weekend: This was the first time I met all the other exchange students of our district. It was an unforgettable weekend because we all lived the same experience so immediately found common things even if we came from all over the world and made very good friends.

- Universal Studios: I went and spent the afternoon at Universal with 2 friends and my host mother. And we assist to the “Blue Man Group” show. It was my friend’s birthday so we showed up during the show and it was really exciting. Still for this friend’s birthday, the week before, a whole bunch of really cool kids and me went to spend the weekend to his house. We went an island to eat and we swam, went wakeboarding, played football, I just had a lot of fun.

- Interact meeting: Interact club from a lot of different schools met to make plans for future actions and share ideas to help people. (Interact is a service club who help people in their community and sometimes worldwide, a sort youth’s Rotary.)

- St. Augustine: I visited St. Augustine, the oldest city here in Florida with Jonas and my host mother. I learned more about the origin of New Smyrna and the history of Florida.

- I go a lot to the beach, wakeboarding, hang out with friends and taste all the fast foods, mudding in Samsula, parties, and so much more... I am really enjoying my stay here and if only time could go just a little bit slower…

Thank you to everybody who made this happen and I really encourage ALL the kids from high school to contact your Rotary Club and ask more information about these exchanges because we are having a such wonderful time here… And you have to live it to understand…

Preview of next journal… Kennedy Space center, Rotary Daytona weekend, Halloween horror night at Universal, Gators football game in Gainesville, Homecoming football game parade and dance, and a lot more.

January 4 Journal

Hi everybody,

I know I haven’t been writing my journal very frequently and I have no excuses for that but that I’m lazy. But I also had a whole lot of things going on in my Floridian life. So let me share these with you…

So from where I was in my last journal until the New Year 2008 my life has been pretty busy, so let’s start by the beginning.

So let’s go back to October, already seems so far away…

First the Homecoming dance and game. That was my first homecoming experience because we don’t have those kinds of things in Belgium. Everything starts with the football game. The spirit of the high school is simply incredible. How everybody cheers the same team and colors. And then the dance, my only reference to it was the American movies and it was just like it. I was living my own little TV show, boys and girls preparing each other their outfit and stuff separately, our suits and their dresses. Then we meet and go to lunch. We finally hit the dance. The dance… all an experience… interesting experience… I can tell that I’m already looking forward for prom!

October also means Halloween. It was my first time trick or treating Halloween party. I also carved my own pumpkin and I think I did a pretty good job for a first time. I definitely think we should export this last one to Europe.

All the exchange students also got together for a weekend. We went and visited the Kennedy Space Center which was pretty neat. We also went to an art show that wasn’t that good from my personal point of view so we ended up playing football in a park. And we always have a good time just hanging out all together.

Biketoberfest! I also had the chance to go to the Iron Horse Saloon where I saw some of the biggest motorcycles ever. It also gave me the opportunity to meet people with totally different mentalities and that was pretty cool.

There here comes November!

November started pretty good by an extended weekend to Miami. Me, Jonas, Niky and Tom went for 4 days to Miami. This is just one of the most amazing places I’ve ever seen. South beach, ocean drive, the Hooters… everything was great.

But November also means my birthday! I turned 18 this November and got 2 parties for this occasion. First, Rotary organized a dinner in Rotary Park, really neat place where a few friends came to eat to. And the second party was a combined birthday with Jonas and we all spend the afternoon at Tom’s. I had a really good time there.

I also have to talk about scuba diving. Me and 5 other exchange students took benefit of the occasion of being here to learn scuba diving. This was one of the best things I’ve experienced so far. First we had to be certified so we had to study from a book and a DVD the basics skills required to keep this experience safe and be able to enjoy the maximum of it. Our first dive was in a pool were we learned how to communicate under water, signs, equalizing, clear our masks and a lot more. After this we went in Ponce DeLeon springs for our “real” first dive. We went down to 30 feet and experience the pressure of water and being deeper than usual in the water. We made another dive in Blue springs were I was able to approach a whole bunch of unordinary fish and even touch a manatee!!! This time we went down to 60 feet in a cave, which was really exciting.

Football is something else I’ve learned to like. I went to two College football games since I’m here and I loved it both time. (Go Gators!)

All this is new for me but every new experience I’ve done here has been really good and interesting. Like Thanksgiving. Never heard about it or maybe once in a “Simpsons” episode. But here I actually had the real spirit. I got to meet more of the family and friends sharing this huge turkey. I don’t know if I ever ate so much but it was really good.

December… See when I say that time go by so fast, all these things I’ve done just seem like they just happened but 3 months already passed by.

December was more about family and gathering all together.

It was my first Christmas that I could actually pass in a T-shirt. The Christmas spirit is definitely part of the American culture. I’ve never saw so much decorations, lights and other Christmas stuff. Even if blowup snowmen under 80 degrees looks kind of awkward.

So I experienced Christmas Eve, shopping, Christmas movies and all this. And Santa Claus came during the night and we got to open our presents in the morning. I even had my own stocking.

After Christmas, New Year! I went to Jacksonville for 2 days for the New Year. On the 31st we went to Jacksonville to walk with the Rotary float in the Gator Bowl Parade. And finally we went to the house of David and Melody Shacter for a party to enter the year 2008. I had a really good time but we didn’t sleep a whole lot.

Now, last but not least, I had to talk about my host families.

I just changed family and arrived in my new one on the 29th of December. I only spend a few days here but I can already tell that I am going to enjoy my time here to.

I wanted to thank Mary Margaret Peterson who has been a wonderful host mom. I really had an unforgettable time with her and even if my new family looks great too, I already miss her and my sisters.

I’ll make a real effort to keep these journals updated because I even enjoy doing them and reading them afterwards because like I said, time goes by really fast and unfortunately there are details I forget.

So more news next month…

March 16 Journal

Hey everybody,

Well I have to tell you that this last month and a half in Florida was one of the best ever! I did so many things and had so many incredible moments that I don’t really know where to start from.

So I now live with my new family since January and I really enjoy it. Things are a lot different in a lot of ways but I like it. I have now a little sister and an older brother when I was used to be the center of attention being an only child. The year started by the Seacamp where I had a wonderful time. It was a lot of fun seeing everybody all together again and we got to meet a lot of great new students. I also totally fell in love with the Keys. This place looks like a paradise for me, a place apart where you can rest and have fun and don’t have to think about anything. So I loved it so much that I already went back down there and made my first boat-ocean-coral reef dive!! It just was one of the greatest experiences ever. The corals were gorgeous, lots of fish, perfect water and air temperature… however it was just wonderful. And I got sea-sick because the water was very agitated and shallow. We went to the beach and one of Tom’s friends took us on his boat to discover the several smaller islands in the vicinity of Key Largo.

I also had the visit of a friend from Belgium and it was really cool to talk to him in English. We stayed busy the 14 days he stayed here. We went to Miami for a week. It was really crazy but a lot of fun. We went to see the Orlando Magic playing against the LA Lakers, my first NBA game and it was pretty incredible. The atmosphere was worth a soccer game. We went to the Daytona Speedway to see the Budweiser shootout. With all my host family we went to Gator Park and did a boat ride with an airboat. All this might seem regular activities for people living here but for us it was really unusual and exceptional. And the fun fact is that he did the exact same observations that I did 6 month ago when I first got here.

After that my host sister came back home with two of her friends for spring break and it was really cool seeing her again because she is crazy…in a positive way of course.

We are now right in the middle of tennis season and I play pretty much every day. It's great since I’ve gained 23 pounds since my arrival… I’m a little bit ashamed but not really.

It is today Sunday night and I’m about to get back to school. I didn’t go a lot last week since it was the FCAT tests but I stayed busy anyway. Yesterday I went to Busch Gardens all day with Tom McDermott and Dot. They took me plus 7 other kids and we had a really really good time there. They have the craziest roller coasters ever and we’ve been on every single one of them.

I am now looking forward for the visit of my parents who should arrive on the 25th at night. And also because that means: beginning of spring break! They already have all a program planned and it sounds like a lot of fun. I’ll tell you all about it in the next journal...
