Deniz' Bio

Merhaba! Hello! Hallo! Bonjour! Konnichi wa!

My name is Berk Deniz Yilmaz. I’m an exchange student… and come from the Eastern part of the Europe and Western part of the Middle East; Turkey! I have a sister who is 11 years old, ah I love her so much J and my mother and father too! I was born on the 23rd of June in Samsun, which is one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey. The Black Sea and the green mountains, make you feel wonderful. So I moved with my family to Istanbul. Istanbul is the most charming city in the world. Istanbul is created in two sides, European and Asian. The Bosphorus runs between both sides and amazes people with its beauty. I graduated from high school, prepared for University exam in Istanbul Kartal Anatolian high school. I have been accepted for engineering University in Germany. School never ends J This will be my 5th year in high school (1 year German language preparation). As you see, I have a busy and complicated education life. But it’s OK, because I want to learn. I want to know.

Since I was just a kid, I always dreamed about traveling the world, seeing different cultures and learning different languages. So I started with English, and I had 2 years French but during the high school I forgot it allJ. But during high school I became fluent in German! And in America (now) I’m taking French again and started to remember (again) J .Even with internet I started to learn some Japanese. But it’s not a big deal, I can’t count ehehe.

I’m a strong person. I can get past any trouble. My personal resources are unlimited. I get my strength from the people who love me and who wish the best for me. And I try my best to be strong against anything as much as possible, J but I’m an emotional guy too. For me being away from the persons that I love is hard. Being an exchange student is hard, J but believe me IT IS WONDERFUL!

You meet lots of new people, try lots of new foods or HUGE sizes of foods. People are wonderful too. Since you are an exchanger, you won’t have any problem making new friends. But if you are already graduated and not allowed to drive, it might be boring sometimes. J I’m the oldest guy in the school! :D

If anyone who wants to be an exchanger or might suggest being one to friends, listen to my words; This is the opportunity of your lifetime! The best year that you can ever spend.

October 27 Journal

Merhaba! Hello! Hallo! Bonjour! Hoi!

Finally I had a wonderful opportunity to see overseas. Which means a lot in my short life so far. I’m having so much fun since two months here. Enjoying the place that you are in, the atmosphere that you are breathing. I am in totally different place now, which people drinking with gallons not liters J Wow. I really enjoy my life here with my parents and friends. Unfortunately I don’t have any exchange students near me, but of course little Deniz managed to find cool friends already! I always lived in big cities, so I wanted to have a get away into the small place. I have founded my place! Tallahassee is not too small and not too much crowded. I love this quiet city (sometimes too quiet though J) . In that small amount of time I have made good memories already, I will share those precious moments with you right now!

It's sometimes hard actually, when your beloved family and your friends are 9,000 miles far away. But it is necessary to learn how to survive away from them, and having the real life experience. You are learning not to use all your money to buy Ipod and spending entire month with 20 dollar J. A year with full of experiences. I feel my self really lucky to have wonderful parents and good friends. I could end up in a village in nowhere :D.

So story time :

06/August/2008

Little (actually he is a big guy! ) exchanger Deniz (me), opened his eyes in Tallahassee airport as the plane landed in his new home. He kept on walking and seeking his luggage with his last amount of energy after 22 hours of flights! So he kept on walking and carrying 30 kg stuff with him. And thousands of questions are bothering his head. Then suddenly he stops and meets 12 Rotarians who are wearing white t-shirts with Rotary logos, American and Turkish flags on them. And all screaming as "Denizz!!".. So the very first time the little exchanger started to know that he is in right hands. His energy filled up and he started laughing with them…

And as the time he steps outside, he was barely breathing because of the hot weather at 10 o’clock in the night…..

I met with other exchangers and Rotex. And lots of new Rotarians. And I really enjoy to spent time with them J

So there is the dark side of the American dream…. Þ FAST FOOD! Ah yeah man.. Aren’t they delicious? Aren’t they BIG? Yeah my little friend they are great but they also gives cute smooches to your belly! You can’t believe how fast you put on weight! Ah horrible…After saw the hamburgers here.. I felt like waking up in the matrix world. No I never ate a real fast food before! Guys have you ever seen a pizza slice, bigger than your head?

I was lucky to meet with Football here! Otherwise I couldn’t be in such a good shape! (people says I’m a little ham J ) American football was my dream sport all the time! Now I’m playing it almost everyday. J Thanks to my father I have tickets to FSU games in Tally. I enjoy my time here.

Yet living as a exchanger life is not always easy as it seems. Sometimes you miss your old routine. And it can be hard to get in a new shape against new rules. Its not easy my friend but as I say it's wonderful so don’t mind missing all good days, enjoy the new opportunities J That’s what I do !

I want to thank my Mother Sevinc Yilmaz for all her unbelievable efforts to get me here! And rest of my family to support me Nihat and Cansu Yilmaz and of course Hannah Saucier (my host sister) J ..

Special thanks to Larry , Deb and Michelle Di Pietro. To supporting me with full power. My lovely family.

I’m so sorry to keep you waiting for my journal! L

Life is beautiful, but sometimes just you have to earn it ..
