Jorina's Bio

Hey, my name is Jorina Franke. I’m from Germany which is in Europe. I am 16 years old and I live in a little city called Barsinghausen. The nearest big city is Hannover. Hannover is the capital of Lower Saxony . I live with my father, my sister, and my brother. My sister, Marisa is 18 years old and my brother Fabian is 21 years. My mother also lives in Barsinghausen, and she is a therapist for handicapped children. My parents are divorced.

In America, I attend Spruce Creek High School which is in Port Orange. I love to play tennis, and I have made the varsity tennis team at Spruce Creek High School. I’m currently in 11th grade. When I go back to Germany I will have two more years of High School. In Germany we have 13 years of school. In my free time I play a lot of tennis, meet friends, listen to music or just hang out.

I wanted to be an exchange student because I’m really interested in new things. I want to learn about other cultures, other people, how they live. I want to learn English very well. I know several people who have been exchange students, and everybody says that it was the best year in their life. But they couldn’t describe it, you have to feel it. And now I am here to feel it.

September 24 Journal

I arrived here in Port Orange on August 9th and now I live here with my host family, Mark, Eve, and their son Tyler. They also have another son but he lives in Virginia and goes to college now. My first weeks were so exciting for me. Everything was new and I had to learn that I have to speak English all day long. But it was not too hard because my family is always there for me and helps me with everything.

During the first weeks I went with my family to the beach, visited my host father and host mother at work, and played volleyball with my host brothers and their friends. The best thing what I did the first weeks was the baseball game. I went with my host dad and other Rotarians to a baseball game and I liked it. Then there came a man and told me that I have to come with him and I went with him without knowing what happened and then I was on the playing field and had to throw the ball to the pitcher. It was awesome.

On August 18th school started. My first day at an American High School. I was so excited. The first day in school was not really easy because I was really alone and had no friends and I didn’t understand the teachers. And of course I ate lunch alone. The good thing was that I got off the rest of the week because of the tropical storm.

At the next weekend was the first inbound orientation. And I think I can also say it was the best weekend I had since I’ve been here. I met a lot of people from all over the world. And I loved it because I knew that they have the same problems and that gave me a better feeling. We had so much fun and talked a lot and that was the first time where I forgot some German words. The best thing was that I made a lot of new friends from all over the world and I’m sure I’ll never forget them in my life. The whole weekend helped me a lot for my time in this year.

After this weekend I had to go to school again and the first days were like my first day in high school, but then the next days I made a friend - it’s a boy and he knows my problems because he moved to Florida 3 years ago without speaking English so he had the same problems with school and making friends. And now we do our homework together and help each other and everything like that. That was the first friend I made but now I’ve more friends because I play tennis everyday and there are some really nice girls and I meet them sometimes. And I’ve other friends in my classes they are really nice.

I told you that I play tennis in school and I’ve already played my first tournament in Florida and it was good. I won singles and doubles with my friend.

I think that is everything what I did special the last weeks.

About my school I can just say I like it so far because sport is really important in schools and I like that. My school (Spruce Creek High School…best school;-) ) starts at 7.30 and finish at 2.45 but I play tennis after school so I’m home at 4 or 5.

About my family I can just say they are really nice and help me a lot with all my problems and I can talk to them whenever I want. I think I’ll have a really good year with a lot of experiences.

Thanks to all the people who made this year possible to me. Thanks to you, I’ll have the best year in my life.
