2003 Short-Term Exchange Student to Italy

Sponsor: Gainesville Rotary Club

This summer I spent three weeks in the Tuscan region of Italy . The exact town was Marina Di Pietrasanta. It is a lovely small seaside resort town. I stayed with the Pasquini family. They were very inviting and treated me like I was part of the family.

Vitorrio Pasquini is part of the R.C. Viareggio- Versilia Rotary Club. The meeting I went to was interesting. I had to get up in front of everyone and say something in italian! Everyone really likes the daughter of the family. We got along great and I'm looking forward to her coming and staying with me.

They took me a lot of places. They live in the province of Lucca which is really close to Florence. It was the first place I went. It was such a big city. My favorite town was the town of Lucca . The original city is completely surrounded by walls. It is known as the town of 100 churches. It felt like everywhere you turned there was a church! We went to the actual city of Pietrasanta a few times. I also went to Pisa to see the leaning tower.

While in Italy I was able to learn about another culture. I learned that Italians are just as loud and fun to be around as the media portrays them to be. I was also given the opportunity to change their minds about Americans. It was great to talk to them about world issues and get their feed-back. I'm really glad that I went in the exchange program and not only got a chance to see a beautiful country but I was able to really learn about another culture.
